Renting a car in Ireland can be a convenient and enjoyable way to explore the country and see all that it has to offer. However, one decision that you’ll need to make when renting a car is whether to choose an automatic or manual transmission. In this article, we’ll provide some helpful information to help you make this decision.

Advantages and disadvantages

First, let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of automatic and manual transmission cars. Automatic transmission cars are generally considered to be easier to drive, especially if you’re not used to driving a manual transmission car. They also tend to be more comfortable and provide a smoother ride. However, they can be a little more expensive to rent and may not be as fuel-efficient as manual transmission cars.

On the other hand, manual transmission cars are typically less expensive to rent and can be more fuel-efficient. They also provide a more engaging driving experience and can be more fun to drive. However, they can be difficult to drive if you’re not used to them, and they may not be as comfortable to ride in.

In Ireland, manual transmission cars are quite common and are often the default option when renting a car. However, many rental car companies do offer automatic transmission cars, so it’s worth checking to see if they’re available. Keep in mind that automatic transmission cars may be a little more expensive to rent, so you’ll want to factor that into your decision.

If you’re planning on traveling to Ireland and you’re not used to driving a manual transmission car, it may be a good idea to rent an automatic transmission car. This will make it easier for you to drive and will provide a more comfortable and enjoyable ride. However, if you’re comfortable driving a manual transmission car and you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, then a manual transmission car may be the way to go.

Traffic rules and customs

Regardless of which type of transmission you choose, it’s important to remember that driving in Ireland can be quite different from driving in other countries. The roads in Ireland are often narrower and windier than those in other countries, and they may not be in as good of condition. Additionally, traffic rules and customs in Ireland can be different from those in other countries, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with them before you start driving.

One way to do this is to read up on the traffic rules and customs in Ireland before you go. You can find information on the Road Safety Authority‘s website, which provides useful advice and tips on driving in Ireland. Additionally, you can talk to the rental car company when you pick up your car to get any additional information that you need.

When driving in Ireland, it’s also important to be aware of the local traffic laws and regulations. For example, all drivers in Ireland are required to drive on the left side of the road, which can be a challenge if you’re not used to it. Additionally, you’ll need to be aware of the speed limits, which can vary depending on the type of road that you’re driving on.

Important things to consider

If you chose to drive a manual / stick car and have no previous experience of driving manual or haven’t driven a manual in years or have not driven manual on the opposite side of the road you may in a very short time burn the clutch. This happens when you drive a manual like an automatic i.e. you don’t go through the gears correctly.

This can happen within 30 minutes or 30 km from pickup. It’s not a mechanical fault with the car ( if clutch was burnt out when you picked it up you’d know ! ) you will have caused the burn out.

Your insurance does not cover a burnt clutch !! You’ll need a replacement car and you’ll face a repair charge of probably €1500 plus depending on the car type.

If you have any doubts and certainly if you have no experience of driving manual, take an automatic.

Conclusion

Overall, renting a car in Ireland can be a great way to see the country and explore all that it has to offer. Whether you choose an automatic or manual transmission car, it’s important to do your research and familiarize yourself with the local traffic laws and customs before you start driving. By doing so, you’ll be able to have a safe and enjoyable trip.
